29 year old Freeskier Arne Backstrom dies in Peru Ski accident

Squaw local, Arne Backstrom, passed away yesterday while skiing in the Cordillera Blanca region of Peru. Arne was 29 years old. He was an avid competitor on the Freeskiing World Tour. Last season he took 1st place at 2010 Subaru Freeskiing World Tour, Revelstoke, B.C. Arne grew up in Seattle skiing at Crystal Mountain, Wa. He was a member of Unofficial Squaw's Kick Ass Blasters. Arne is the brother of pro freeskier Ingrid and pro snowboarder Ralph.


Update:

Arne was on a ski trip with Sweetgrass Productions. Arne and the crew were attempting to ski Artesonraju, a 5,999 meter peak in Peru's Cordillera Blanc region. The accident took place on a sub peak while preparing for the main objective. Thoughts and prayers go out to the Backstrom family and their friends.
