Nazaré—one of the world’s most mesmerizing and untamed coastlines—is shaped by a greater series of events far from Portugal. The process starts with Old Man Winter. Storms that ravage the Atlantic Ocean produce massive swells, that will eventually travel down south. After meeting a 16,000-foot underwater canyon, the swell morphs into a monstrous wave, a wave that carries the full force of its journey. Each one is unique in its size and story. Portugal's most active surf filmmaker, Nuno Dias, sought to capture the beauty in his short film, Empties. The film is a project he’s been working on the side for the past two winter amidst capturing big wave surfers.
