TGR Announces the 2013 Grom Contest Winners

Next Up

TGR is stoked to announce the winners of the 2013 Grom Contest: Jack Wiley and Sawyer Thomas. Wiley threw down to win the overall snowboard category while Thomas emerged as the overall ski category winner and was also awarded the 2013 Grom Contest Grand Prize.

This fall, each Way of Life premiere will showcase an edit of their riding and skiing.
We caught up with Wiley and Thomas to learn more about their season and what winning the contest means to them.

Jack Wiley—Snowboard Winner

Tell us a little about yourself—how old are you, where are you from, and what do you do when not spending time on the snow?
I'm fourteen years old and from Jackson Hole, Wyoming. When I’m not spending time on snow, I tend to skateboard or make mini movies or edits of skateboarding or snowboarding. I like photography and just hanging out with my friends.

What caused you to enter the Grom contest?
What caused me to enter the Grom Contest was seeing things about my friend Daniel Tisi winning a few years back. I just put an edit I recently made into the contest, barely knowing what it was or how it worked.

How did you go about filming your edit? Who helped you with the filming and editing?
I’m on the Jackson Hole Freeride Program, and the coaches have little cameras they can film with to review later. I went in once or twice to get that footage off of the hard drive and just made a little video out of it. I did spend one day at Snow King and The Village filming with one of my friends just for fun, but it all came together pretty well.

What’s been keeping you busy this summer?
This summer I’ve been skateboarding a lot, and I had a chance to go to Mt. Hood to Windells Camp with a few guys on the Freeride Program. I chose Mt. Hood so I could get even better and then just throw down in Argentina next year.

What do you hope to gain from winning the Grom Contest?
From winning the Grom Contest I hope to gain recognition and just some new experiences. I recently moved to Jackson from Seattle, Washington, so this past year has been crazy with new experiences.

Do you have any favorite TGR athletes? Any thoughts on having your edit shown at the Way of Life premiere alongside their segments?
Some of my favorite TGR athletes are Terje Haakonsen, John Spriggs, and Eric Roner! I think having my edit shown at The Way of Life premieres will be crazy. Watching kids’ edits last year, I never thought mine would be up there.

What’s the future have in store for you?
The future stores whatever it wants—from big competitions to crazy big mountain shredding. I’ll let it take me wherever it thinks is best.

Sawyer Thomas—Overall Winner and Ski Winner

Tell us a little about yourself—how old are you, where are you from, and what do you do when not spending time on the snow?
I’m seventeen years old. I was born and raised in Jackson Hole and grew up skiing in the Tetons and at JHMR. When I’m not skiing I am usually looking for another adventure whether it’s climbing, kayaking, or something more obscure like river boarding or slack lining.

What caused you to enter the Grom contest?
The first TGR movie I remember seeing was in 7th grade and it had a pretty big impression on me. When the Grom Contest started I saw it as an opportunity to be part of what I kind of idolize in skiing. I've entered edits the past few years and I’m super excited to be one of the overall winners this year.

How did you go about filming your edit? Who helped you with the filming and editing?
I usually just ski with my good buddies and when we do something cool we film it on whatever we have with us, mostly a small point and shoot camera, but sometimes we make do with iPhones, or if Carson Meyers is there we can get some higher quality shots with his 7d.

What’s been keeping you busy this summer?
Climbing, river sports, work, ski porn.

What do you hope to gain from winning the Grom Contest?
I’m not totally sure yet, but if nothing else, some pretty cool experiences.

Do you have any favorite TGR athletes? Any thoughts on having your edit shown at the Way of Life premiere alongside their segments?
I really like Sage's style of skiing, but they're all pretty amazing. It’s going to be crazy to see my edit on the big screen at the premiere, but it will no doubt be put to shame by the rest of the movie.

What’s the future have in store for you?
Next year is looking like a pretty busy year for me. It’s going to be fully packed with school, applications, the backcountry, and maybe Freeride World qualifiers and racing. Then after that it’s off to college, hopefully somewhere in the mountains.
