With a few seasons of Whistler’s finest under his belt, a newly acquired snowmobile, a duo of film crews (Dendrite, PYP), support from a new hardgoods hookup (Liberty), and weekly webisodes dropping NOW, winter 2011 is looking equal parts fun and opportune for Mr. Liam Casey. Over the course of his 170-plus days last season, Liam went through skis with freakish regularity: he’d try this brand and break this brand; he’d try that brand and break that brand. He’d impress a super-pro who’d give him a pair of these and break them too. His shop hookup would dig a pair of donated rock skis from the back room, and in no time it’d be hasta la pista.

When digging beside him at Momentum, I noticed he doesn’t just get tricks but instead accepts them, almost cognitively, like someone learning a language. His style resembles a homage to hot-dogging but isn’t solely thus. Combine the psychotic creativity of snowboarding’s Andrew Hardingham, the send factor of Switch-everything/ Triple-invert pioneer Chris Turpin, and the rail-technicality/attentionto- style ratio of seemingly every Quebecer, and you may be left with a semblance of some place to start looking for the distinctive approach that Liam takes to ripping winter plank.
