WHISTLER, BC – The Whistler Mountain Bike Park announced today that it will open on May 2, 2015, two weeks ahead of the planned May 15 opening. The Fitzsimmons Zone—the lowest of three defined regions on the mountain—will be in full operation thanks to a lack of low-elevation snow, marking Whistler's earliest opening since 2005, when the same weekend fell on April 30.
“We are thrilled to get everyone back in the bike park earlier than expected this spring,” said Brian Finestone, Whistler Mountain Bike Park manager. “Despite almost having a 2-metre (6.6-foot) snow base in the alpine, with the help of some warmer temperatures in the valley the crew was able to get an early start to get the Fitzsimmons Zone in perfect shape.”

Despite the lack of snow and warmer temperatures lower on the mountain, the trail crews have had their work cut out for them. Fitz Zone trails sustained significant damage during recent rain storms the resort dubbed "apocalyptic," creating blown-out drainages and severe erosion.
Skiing continues in the Whistler Blackcomb alpine where there is still nearly 7 feet of snow, but target opening dates for the Garbonzo (middle) and Peak (upper) Zones are June 20 and June 27 respectively.
