Antelope Butte Foundation Hires Executive and Development Directors
Non-profit steps up efforts to reopen community ski area
SHERIDAN, WY – Antelope Butte Foundation (ABF) is pleased to announce that it has added two integral positions to help advance the reopening of the Antelope Butte Ski and Recreation Area. Effective immediately, Jamie Schectman will serve as the Executive Director, and Andrew Gast will be the Development Director, leading fundraising efforts.
Mr. Schectman is the CEO and Co-founder of Mountain Rider’s Alliance, an organization that works with community focused ski areas and whose goal is to create sustainable mountain playgrounds. Mr. Gast is a fundraising expert who oversaw a $12.8 million campaign while working with the Boy Scouts of America and has an extensive background with recreational-based non-profits.
“Our all-volunteer board has been working steadily for over three years to get us to this point. We are fortunate to be able to bring two professionals aboard with proven track records to help us take this project across the finish line,” says ABF President Mark Weitz. “The people and the energy that have gravitated to this project have been truly astounding. People from all over have connected with us and are supporting our efforts.”
In addition, Hogan Lovells, a leading law firm in the ski industry, provides legal advice to ABF in connection with its efforts to rehabilitate the Antelope Butte ski area. A team of Hogan Lovells lawyers, including Andy Spielman and Ana Gutierrez based out of the firm’s Denver office, have been instrumental in helping advance this project, particularly by providing advice and counsel regarding the U.S. Forest Service processes and approvals necessary to operate a ski area on National Forest System lands.
“Hiring a strong leadership team, having a dedicated and capable Board, and a leading global law firm representing us, we feel this sends a strong message to the community and potential donors that we are prepared and committed to achieving our goal of reopening the Antelope Butte Ski Area,” said Weitz.
Antelope Butte abruptly closed in 2004 due to a dissolution of the family business. In 2011, a group of citizens from the surrounding Northern Wyoming communities began developing a plan to reopen the ski area. The communities rallied to raise funds necessary to prevent demolition of the ski area and begin the process of acquiring the lodge and lifts from the Forest Service. In June 2014, ABF received its 501(c)(3) status and is a Wyoming-based non-profit. In December 2014, an appraisal of the property was completed, setting the stage for a purchase of the ski area infrastructure and lease from the Bighorn National Forest.
“The ABF board has been rigorous and methodical every step of the way, and that has culminated in a rock solid project. Now that we have an appraisal in place and are ready to enter into a purchase and sale agreement and acquire the assets, it’s time to hit the go button,” said Weitz.
