J-Bay Open Called Off for Day After Multiple Shark Sightings

Next Up

Today the J-Bay Open was called off after safety boaters and jet skis spotted multiple sharks about 100 yards from the lineup. The sharks spotted were part of a "larger feeding activity" that was happening at the time. The call left competitors Jordy Smith, Filipe Toledo, and Julian Wilson scrambling towards shore.

In 2015 Mick Fanning was famously attacked by a shark at this same competition. The incident earned world-wide media attention and inspired an ESPN documentary about Fanning's incredible life. We are happy the organizers took caution and called off the competition for the day. It looks like they will still have pumping swell for the next couple days so there will be plenty more waves like this.
