Ogden, Utah – February 13, 2011
After winning the first two stops of the Winter Dew Tour season, both Torstein Horgmo and Jamie Anderson set themselves up as prime candidates for the Dew Cup in the men and women’s snowboard slopestyle finals, respectively. While neither athlete took the top podium position in their final today, Horgmo’s third place finish and Anderson’s second place finish were enough to name them Dew Cup champions. The finals were part of the Toyota Championship, which had record-breaking attendance with over 44,300 people experiencing the four-day event, making it the highest-attended Winter Dew Tour event in the Tour’s history by over 10,000.
Heading into his second and final run, Horgmo, age 23 from Norway, sat in tenth place with the Cup just out of grasp as first-place finisher Eric Willet of Breckenridge, Colo. and then to second-place finisher Mark Mcmorris of Canada slide into Dew Cup contention. In the end, Horgmo earned a 93.75 which was enough for him to stay at the top of the leader board in the final point standings of the season and earn his first Dew Cup of his career.
“Physically, it’s been a painful year, but at the same time the best contest year for me ever, and I’m really stoked about that,” said Horgmo. “Today I just wanted to stay on my feet and land my run. I just wanted to do well at the contests. The Dew Cup proves that I did well at the contests this year.”
Willet, 23, won the men’s snowboard slopestyle final with a competition-crushing run that included a switch back 12 double cork to front 10 double cork to earn a score of 97.25. Mcmorris, 17, finished in second with a 95.00 and Horgmo’s third place score was a 93.75.
“I’m so stoked to be out here and put down a run like that,” said Willet. “I’ve wanted this for three years now. I’ve always been on the podium, always looking up, but finally I was able to get on top at the last stop. It’s a perfect way to finish out my snowboarding season and with a win like this. It’s incredible.”
On the women’s front, 34-year-old Janna Weatherby of Big Bear, Calif., earned a top score of 96.00, with a run that included a cab 540, backside 3 and multiple 50-50s on the rails. Anderson, age 20 of South Lake Tahoe, Calif. followed behind with a second-place score of 95.00 and Canada’s Spencer O’Brien, 23, came in third with a 91.75. Anderson’s finish earned her the second consecutive Dew Cup of her career.
“I’m feeling really good winning the Dew Cup for the second year in a row,” said Anderson. “There have been a lot of contests this year so just getting to ride here at Snowbasin has been amazing.”
The four-day competition is the third and final stop on the 2010-11 Winter Dew Tour season featuring men and women’s snowboarding and freeskiing disciplines. Over the four-day event, approximately 44,300 fans experience the Winter Dew Tour’s Toyota Championship at Snowbasin Resort, making it the highest-attended event in Winter Dew Tour history.
