It takes many years to become a fully certified mountain guide. It requires the right combination of skills in the mountains and the ability to relate to people on a personal level. The starting point for most guides is to be a tail-gunner guide for an operation. Their job is to usually be the last person down, sweeping up behind the rest of the crew to ensure their safety.
